澳大利亚环保组织马奇地区环保团体（MDEG），对新南威尔士州政府批准瑞士矿业公司嘉能可旗下乌兰地下煤矿延长两年运营许可的决定发起挑战。

MDEG发言人于9月3日指出，该组织认为新州独立规划委员会在批准嘉能可申请时，存在多项程序性错误，其中包括未充分考量气候变化对当地的影响。

新州监管机构已于5月22日批准乌兰动力煤矿的延寿申请，将这座年产2000万吨的煤矿运营期，从2033年延长至2035年。嘉能可方面称，此次诉讼是企图利用近期法院判例中的法律漏洞，以拖延或阻止项目推进。
