美国钢铁协会请求白宫介入一笔巴西的5亿美元交易。该协会宣称，此交易可能使中国对全球镍储备拥有更大控制权，不过，买家MMG有限公司已驳回这一说法。

今年2月，英美资源集团表示，将把其巴西镍矿出售给香港上市公司MMG，而MMG由中国国有公司中国五矿集团控股。该交易预计本季度完成。

8月18日，美国钢铁协会在致美国贸易代表贾米森·格里尔的信中指出，这笔潜在收购会让北京方面对大量镍储备产生 “直接影响”，强化其对这种电动汽车电池及不锈钢关键金属的掌控。

目前尚不清楚白宫将如何介入以阻止该交易。但特朗普政府已将重振美国金属和矿产生产列为重点工作，且正与中国进行关税谈判。印尼因中国主导的投资，拥有全球最大的镍产业。
