The Cat®793 XE battery-electric haul truck has arrived at BHP’s Jimblebar iron ore mine in the Pilbara region, marking the start of on-site testing in partnership with Rio Tinto. This also represents the first deployment of Caterpillar’s battery-electric haulage technology in the area that drives Australia’s economy. The presence of the two Early Learner trucks, via collaboration between BHP, Rio Tinto, and Caterpillar, is described as a major step toward a more sustainable future in mining. These electric trucks signal a new era of zero-emission mine haulage while retaining productivity and performance levels.
Once safely operational, trials will proceed to assess the feasibility of battery-electric technology as an alternative to diesel in large-scale iron ore mining operations. These trials will help inform the development of technologies, processes, infrastructure, and human resources required to support lower greenhouse gas emission machines and mine sites in the future. Decarbonization of Pilbara iron ore operations relies on technological progress and R&D breakthroughs, hence BHP and Rio Tinto’s partnership with Caterpillar (supported by WesTrac) to accelerate fleet transition once commercially and operationally viable.
After joint trials, BHP and Rio Tinto will independently decide on scaling trials in their respective operational environments. BHP’s Western Australia Iron Ore Assets President Tim Day noted that launching the first battery-ele...
