Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the proposed coal export duty will be adjusted to reflect prevailing market prices. Currently, the government is conducting a study to calculate the appropriate tariff formula. Speaking at a press conference on the ESDM Ministry’s 2025 performance achievements in Jakarta (quoted on Friday, January 9), he noted that the duty will apply only when coal prices are at an economic level, with the ministry working to define a price range-based structure. For instance, a specific duty rate will be imposed if coal prices range between USD 100 and USD 150 per ton, while a different and typically higher rate will apply when prices exceed USD 150 per ton.
