US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Brazil starting August 1. US importers are adopting a wait – and – see attitude before accepting potentially higher prices. Fausto Varela, head of the Brazilian industry union, said producers are considering paid leave or layoffs for workers as some buyers have suspended contracts. The union is in talks with Brazilian lawmakers, but trade negotiations between Brazil and the US have not progressed as expected.
Varela also said it is difficult to redirect sales to other markets in the short term. Without a market, production will have to stop. Brazil is the largest supplier of this material to the US. About one – third of Brazil’s pig iron exports in the first half of this year went to the US, making the trade crucial to the Brazilian economy.
